White Christmas
Do they know it’s Christmas
White Christmas
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,
Just like the ones I used to know
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
And may all your Christmases be white (all your Christmases be white)
And may all your Christmases be white (all your Christmases be white)
And may all your Christmases be
(All your Christmases be white)
(All your Christmases be white)
Do They Know It’s Christmas?
It’s Christmas time, and there’s no need to be afraid
At Christmas time, we let in light and banish shade
And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time
But say a prayer and pray for the other ones
At Christmas time, it’s hard but while you’re having fun
There’s a world outside your window, and it’s a world of dread and fear
Where a kiss of love can kill you, and there’s death in every tear
And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight we’re reaching out and touching you
Bring peace and joy this Christmas to West Africa
A song of hope they’ll have is being alive
Why is comfort deadly fear
Why is to touch to be scared
How can they know it’s Christmas time at all
Here’s to you
Raise a glass to everyone
Here’s to them
And all their years to come
Can they know it’s Christmas time at all
Feed the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Feed the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Heal the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Feed the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Heal the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Heal the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Feed the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Heal the world, let them know it’s Christmas time again
Heal the world
Let It Snow Let It Snow Let It Snow
Oh, the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we’ve no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Man it doesn’t show signs of stoppin’
And I brought some corn for poppin’
The lights are turned way down low
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we finally kiss good-night
How I’ll hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I’ll be warm
And the fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we’re still good-bye-ing
But as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, and snow
When we finally kiss good-night
How I’ll hate going out in the storm
But if you really grab me tight
All the way home I’ll be warm
Oh the fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we’re still good-bye-ing
But as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
I had 4 fantastic choir sessions with the ladies of North Manchester Library. We learnt ‘Fernando’ and the ladies went to see ‘Mama Mia’ the musical. We also did a flash mob style performance in the library, which went down very well.
The ladies have day trips out, so I went to the Manchester Art Gallery and chose a few paintings to connect with our songs, as a way of inspiring us all to take a trip to the gallery. I took photos and projected them onto the wall back at the library.
I made some connections between the first song you hear ‘Bella Mama’ and the paintings of the Manchester born artist Annie Swynerton, exploring themes of motherhood and women’s empowerment. The second song you hear ‘Fernando’ is about two Mexican soldiers recalling their part in the Mexican revolution, so I chose the painting of Andromache, a women who lost her husband and son in the Trojan wars. I also chose some paintings in the current exhibition on mindfulness and a couple of abstract paintings to throw in the mix.
With a longer project these themes could be explored more.
This is our recording from this week.
Practice track. Listen to the short bit of words and then sing it, continue until song is complete.

“Fernando”
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar
They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I’m not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
Now we’re old and grey Fernando
Since many years I haven’t seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
Do you still recall the fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
Yes, if I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
“Take A Chance On Me”
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you’ve got no place to go, if you’re feeling down
If you’re all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain’t no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me tryTake a chance on me
(That’s all I ask of you honey)
Take a chance on meWe can go dancing, we can go walking, as long as we’re together
Listen to some music, maybe just talking, get to know you better
‘Cos you know I’ve got
So much that I wanna do, when I dream I’m alone with you
It’s magic
You want me to leave it there, afraid of a love affair
But I think you know
That I can’t let goIf you change your mind, I’m the first in line
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you’ve got no place to go, if you’re feeling down
If you’re all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain’t no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me tryTake a chance on me
(Come on, give me a break will you?)
Take a chance on me
Oh you can take your time baby, I’m in no hurry, know I’m gonna get you
You don’t wanna hurt me, baby don’t worry, I ain’t gonna let you
Let me tell you now
My love is strong enough to last when things are rough
It’s magic
You say that I waste my time but I can’t get you off my mind
No I can’t let go
‘Cos I love you soIf you change your mind, I’m the first in line
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you’ve got no place to go, if you’re feeling down
If you’re all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can’t you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can’t you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa ba-ba
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me[fade]
Well how do you do, young Willie MacBride
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside
And rest for a while ‘neath the warm summer sun
I’ve been working all day and I’m nearly done
I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
When you joined the great fallen of nineteen-sixteen
I hope you died well and I hope you died clean
Or Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife
Lowly
Did they sound the dead-march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the Last Post and chorus
Did the pipes play the ‘Flowers of the Forest’
Did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined
Although you died back
in nineteen-sixteen
In that faithful heart are you ever nineteen
Or are you a stranger without even a name
Enclosed and forever behind the glass frame
In a old photograph, torn and battered and stained
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife
Lowly
Did they sound the dead-march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the Last Post and chorus
Did the pipes play the ‘Flowers of the Forest’
The sun now it shines on the green fields of France
There’s warm summer breeze makes the red poppies dance
And look how the sun – shines from under the clouds
There’s no gas, no barbed wire, there’s no guns firing
now
But here in this graveyard it’s still no-man’s-land
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
To man’s blind indifference to his fellow man
To a whole generation that were butchered and damned
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife
Lowly
Did they sound the dead-march as they lowered you down
And did the band play the Last Post and chorus
Did the pipes play the ‘Flowers of the Fo—o—rest’
Now young Willie McBride I can’t help wonder why
Do those that lie here know why they died
And did they believe when they answered the cause
Did they really believe that this war would end wars
Well the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the pain
The killing and dying was all done in vain
For young Willie McBride it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife
Lowly
Did they sound the dead-march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the Last Post and chorus
Did the pipes play the ‘Flowers of the Forest’
Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife
Lowly
Did they sound the dead-march as they lowered you down
Did the band play the Last Post and chorus
Did the pipes play the ‘Flowers of the Forest’
